WHY A MEDICAL REVIEW OFFICER IS ESSENTIAL
For a workplace drug-testing program to be successful the results must be accurate and reported impartially. Medical review of drug test results protects both employees and employers from the liabilities inherent in any drug-testing program. The Medical Review Officer (MRO) is responsible for reviewing all test results.
MANAGING THE DRUG TESTING PROCESS
Whenever a result is reported as non-negative, it is the Review Officer’s responsibility to determine
if the donor has a valid reason for the result. By interviewing the donors, the MRO distinguishes
between employees who have a valid prescription and those that are using or abusing drugs. On a
daily basis, the MRO performs a number of vital duties.
THE BENEFITS OF USING MEDICAL REVIEW OFFICER SERVICES
The Medical Review Officer (MRO) acts as an independent, impartial “gatekeeper” and advocate,
for the accuracy and integrity of the drug testing process. The MRO provides a quality assurance
review of the drug testing process by reviewing each Custody and Control Form and test result.
The Medical Review Officer ensures the proper reporting of test results by determining whether
there is a legitimate medical explanation for confirmed positive, adulterated, substituted, or invalid
drug tests results. The MRO investigates and corrects any problems within the testing process,
ensures the timely flow of test results, and performs all his/her duties in compliance within
